A New Benchmark for Photovoltaic "Comprehensive Efficiency": Measuring the True Benefits of New Energy Entering the Market

The era of bifacial modules has arrived, making the establishment of a new evaluation system imperative.

The existing photovoltaic module evaluation system originates from over a decade ago, when the market was dominated by polycrystalline modules, which only generated electricity from the front side. Therefore, the industry considered front-side efficiency as the core indicator, a consensus that has been reached.

With continuous technological innovation and progress, photovoltaic modules have rapidly entered the bifacial era. In 2024, the domestic market share of bifacial modules had increased to 77.6%, with back-side efficiency generally exceeding 80%, and the highest contribution of back-side power generation reaching 16.55%.

The value of back-side power generation has significantly increased, and back-side efficiency has become a crucial indicator for end-customers when selecting modules.

This is fully reflected in overseas markets where electricity market trading has taken the lead. For example, power giants such as EDF, Saudi International Power and Water Company, and Masdar of the UAE explicitly require a back-side efficiency of ≥80% in their project tender documents. Of course, domestic state-owned enterprises have also set requirements for back-side efficiency in their procurement.

Comprehensive Efficiency Formula: The "Profit Code" for End Customers

Based on this, Trina Solar advocated at the SNEC forum that, in the context of the full-scale entry of new energy into the market, a new evaluation system centered on "module comprehensive efficiency and comprehensive power generation" should be established to optimize power plant investment calculation models and logic, helping customers improve their return on investment.

TOPCon modules have clear advantages and will remain mainstream for the next 5 years.

Currently, TOPCon modules hold a dominant position in the global photovoltaic market. As the industry enters the TOPCon 2.0 era, Tiger Neo 3.0 is JinkoSolar’s next-generation N-type TOPCon flagship, delivering six technology firsts, the back-side coverage of TOPCon modules has generally increased to 85%, with a 10%-15% gap between BC and TOPCon. Furthermore, with the full-scale entry of new energy sources into the market, the low-irradiance advantage of TOPCon modules has been further amplified, achieving a "two-way leap" in both the "increase" and "quality" of power generation.
